Neuroma
A neuroma is an entrapment of a nerve between two metatarsal bones. The nerves in the feet are very small, and sometimes the nerves that go to the toes can become "stuck" between the metatarsals or long bones in the feet. The nerve then becomes very irritated and begins to swell. The patient may experience numbness, a sharp, shooting or burning pain to the foot which can radiate into the toes. Tight shoes can exacerbate the problem.
Diagnosis is made with a thorough clinical exam and x rays. Treatment includes cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory medications, orthotics, and sometimes surgery.
