Gout

Is a type of arthritis that occurs most commonly in the big toe joint. It is usually caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Gout can be precipitated by dietary factors such as meat and fish, alcohol and being overweight. Most often patients complain of a red, warm, swollen and very tender big toe joint. This can also occur in the ankle as well.
Diagnosis is usually made with a thorough clinical exam, x rays and lab studies. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory medications and those that control the production of uric acid. Your doctor will prescribe the proper medication for you once a diagnosis of gout is made.
